Second Life like real life has very creative people tucked away in various places. Often these folks are not so easy to find but when you do it's always a pleasant surprise.
The creator of the piece you see on the left is a Second Life artist named Feathers Boa. Her work is truly an effort at creating art that fulfills the possibilities of virtual world functionality. Being in the virtual world as an avatar you experience it in ways that are quite immersive. As you approach each piece it alters and changes and provides the viewer with new visual cues to the nature of the piece. In short, it's interactive in ways that real life art is not often seen.
We created a page on the SL Totems site to give non-SL folks a chance to see her work. It’s located here: http://sltotems.com/feathersboa.aspx
For some of us it's vital. Having an outlet for creative expression is essential to feeling balanced and alive for many of us. For others expressions of creativity are often subtle and far less evident and yet I think still vital.
Creativity for me is expressed in many different ways. Some are evident and some are not. I express myself through many traditional forms of art both physical and digital but in other ways as well.
A less evident expression from my past was through the work I did for many years as a therapist working with people from all walks of life and presenting all forms of issues needing creative solutions. As no one collection of solutions works for all it was essential that I be able to adapt and alter solutions to meet their needs. Without a willingness to work with people in a creative manner I would have been lost as a provider of solutions. It was difficult and yet often thrilling work. It required a focus not unlike that of my other more traditional expressions of creativity.
The young lady you see in the photo above is a resident of Second Life. While she is not actually painting on that canvas in front of her take a closer look at her. See the tattoos? In a virtual world like Second Life almost anything is possible and the opportunities to express yourself creatively are almost endless. Who is she in real life? I have no idea. But in Second Life it's her desire to make a creative statement with her body and clothing. She is exploring her creative nature in an environment that is safe to do so. It has allowed her to experiment and challenge her real life sense of decorum and the societal norms in a way she may not feel is possible in her real life. She may or may not be overtly creative in her real life but one thing is certain, she is creative in Second Life.
A toast! Here's to creative expression!
