Read Saramago
Finding a good author is like finding a diamond. For me it's rare when I find one that truly challenges and delights me. Jose Saramago is definitely that for me.
His amazing composition of reality mixed with tinges of fantasy never fails to send a shiver through me. As he is a Nobel prize winner he has fortunately gotten the credit he deserves.
If you would like to give his work a try I suggest Blindness or The Stone Raft as starter works. Blindness is a bit gritty but is an amazing work. The Stone Raft leans a little more toward fantasy. Whichever you chose you wont be sorry.
